Ask HN: Why does Myspace smush videos.

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Alright, so i was trying to figure out why myspace squeezes the videos of non myspace videos. The question of course holds one possiblity; myspace figures that the negative impact on their users will be off-set by the gains made by pushing their users to use myspace videos. I dont know if that would be a good business move.

So maybe they are doing it to hold to standards that their new redesign requires and they are asking people to implement this standard size. If you haven’t noticed as a result of the gradual change they are trying to organize your pages to be less confusing. Of course this is more confusing since Myspace held to IE as their browser of choice for their simple editor, that lacks css standards associated with Google Chrome, Safari and believe it or not also Firefox.

I guess my real question is, in order to “get down to brass tacks”, would it be a bad business decision to make a product that integrates externally with this company in the long run? Who will develop the standards, the community or the company?

In my mind facebook is John McCain, i just dont see it winning the presidency. Myspace definitely has the potential but are they looking for mutual prosperity, I dont know?
